Model - G23
Appearance - 2-seater sports
Power plant - 2.8 litre Ford V6
Further details - As G21 production came to an end at the start of 1978 there was an urgent need for a new model. Taking the G21 theme and developing it into an open car with optional hardtop seemed the way forward. The result was an updated look for the G21 shape at the front with pop-up headlamps and a smoother line, whilst at the rear the boot was flattened out with a new rear panel.
The chassis of the prototype was pure G21 3-litre complete with independent rear suspension and the engine remained the Ford V6 ‘Essex’ unit. The finished car was a stylish high performance car launched early in 1980. In an attempt to keep the price as low as possible a further prototype was built this time using a live axle from the Ford parts bin and utilising trailing arms from the Vauxhall range which greatly improved the ride over the G21 set up. The engine was also updated to the 2.8 litre Ford ‘Cologne’ V6 unit. The width of the new rear axle required body extensions over the wheels and this feature was also used at the front for balance.
Despite the huge appeal of the G23 to many, sales didn’t materialise in volume and it was decided not to put the model into full production. Both cars built still survive today.
